Modern smartphones can typically shoot great videos but action cameras are more valuable for their form-factor. Action cameras are small, light and tough plus they can be strapped to any object (your head, helmet, bicycle, surfboard, etc) to shoot dynamic videos. The brand GoPro is synonymous with action cameras with their new GoPro Hero 4 silver being one of the best action cameras you can buy.
The GoPro Hero 4 Silver is very much similar to the GoPro Hero 4 Black. But it is the first GoPro camera to come with a 1.7 inch touch screen which all the previous GoPro Model lacked. The screen makes it easy for the users to frame the shots, control the camera, and play back content. The camera is able to capture a maximum resolution of 1080p60 and 720p120 as well as 12MP photos at a rate of 30 frames per second. The GoPro Hero 4 silver has also been designed to perform better in situations where light is available in fewer amounts with the two new modes – Night Photos and Night Lapse. Another added feature in Silver is the Auto Low Light mode where the camera automatically adjusts according to the lighting conditions.
The GoPro Hero 4 Silver comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Both the wireless protocols allow the users to connect to the GoPro App and the Smart Remote. The Smart Remote allows the users to control the camera (or even multiple cameras) remotely. The GoPro App also lets the users control the camera by offering full control of functions and settings, easy shooting, preview and playback as well as sharing the videos via text, email, and other social media platforms.
Another update in the GoPro Hero 4 Silver is the availability of Protune. The Protune can be used for both –videos and photos and allows the camera to record at the highest bit rate of 45Mbps and change the color setting to either – GoPros’ color profile or flat which is a neutral color profile suitable for post-production stages. The Protune also adjusts the sharpness, exposure and control the shutter speed in the new Night Photo and Night Lapse Mode.
The Superview feature can also be used for 1080p and 720p resolutions that allow the screen to dynamically stretch to a full 16:9 making room for enhanced details on the footage. The Silver model of the GoPro gives you a time-lapse choice of 0.5,1,2,5,10,30, and 60 seconds intervals. The time-lapsed video modes can also be activated to compile all videos stored in the camera to create a single video file.
The waterproof action camera features the same dimensions as the previous GoPro Hero 4 cameras -1.6 by 2.25 by 1.12 inches. Along with the standard GoPro housing, the Silver weights 5.2 ounces which is a bit heavier than its ancestor – Hero 3 plussilver which weighs 4.8 ounces with the housing. The Hero 4 Silver comes with standard housing as well as two added backdoors from which one you can get access to ports and the other where you can access the touch screen. The shots can be taken by simply holding the camera between the fingers and the added mounting accessories such as the adhesive-based mounts which can be attached to helmets, surfboards, car or even walls make shooting more adventurous. There are many other options for mounts available by GoPro as well as third-party manufacturers which can be purchased for an affordable price and used with the GoPro Hero 4 Silver. GoPro also offers a mini USB cable and rechargeable batteries that can be used for extended trips.
The GoPro Hero 4 Silver can be purchased for a retail price of $399 from the GoPro online store and $325 from the Amazon marketplace. The company is offering a one-year warranty with the camera and will repair/replace the gadget due to manufacturing defects. A no-questions asked 30-days guarantee is also presented by GoPro if the action cam is purchased from their online store.
Is it worth the price?
The Hero 4 Silver has a huge edge over the previous Hero 3 Plus edition which was known to shoot blurry footage. The touch screen makes it easier for the users to frame their shots and review the footage they have created. The action camera is fun and easy to use, and the action enthusiasts can make it as simple and as complicated as they want it to be.
The main area where the GoPro Hero 4 Silver lacks is the battery life. Of course, other action cameras which are available in the market are also not providing long-lasting batteries. The removable 1,160 mAh pack battery lasts approximately for one hour and 40 minutes (*recording time). A user has also complained that the battery lasted only 1 hour when the camera was switched on and not recording. However, the battery is removable and with all other action cameras, you have to keep a spare battery on the go especially if you are out on extended trips.
Of course, many find the price a bit too much for an action camera especially those who don’t need the certain features that the Silver comes with. The Silver is very much similar to the previously released Hero 3 plus black edition. However, the new touch screen along with the great performance given by all GoPro cameras justifies the price tag that comes with the GoPro Hero 4 silver. Will you choose to buy the featured model or go for the less expensive and the discontinued models by GoPro such as the Hero 3 White edition?
If I were given a choice, I will definitely go for the Silver mainly because of the built-in LCD screen. The Silver is comparatively better than its siblings for its still images and time-lapse feature. Do let us know about your preference!
